Can Free Classifieds Really Help Your Business?

February 7th, 2010 No comments »

Classified ads are a unique and innovative way to advertise, as opposed to conventional advertising, and are an essential medium for those who cannot afford the astronomical costs of more traditional forms of advertising. You can see classified advertising in newspapers, online and other periodicals, where often, pages are devoted just for the purpose of these ads. The greatest advantage of classified ads is that anyone is allowed to advertise via this medium, as opposed to the other types of advertising, where only companies or business can advertise. That means that anyone wanting to sell even a household item like a used car, beanbag or electronics can do so at minimum expense.

To combat the unaffordable costs of traditional advertising, newspapers developed a cheaper and easier way to put out the word. Classifieds are often small ads containing a few lines of text and contact details for more information about the product on sale. No space is wasted on illustrations, and abbreviations are commonly used to save space.

These ads are labeled as classifieds, because they appear in newspapers or online classified under different categories. This makes finding what you are looking for much easier, as you don’t have to sift through pages of tiny, cramped writing. It is also possible to advertise for free, by taking advantage of free classifieds. Papers like the Penny Saver are excellent ways to advertise at no cost.

Obviously, with the advent of the internet, classifieds have also found their way onto cyberspace. You can find millions of classified ads on the internet at the click of a button, and with the added convenience of a search engine, no product is unsearchable. Another great advantage of internet classifieds is that they are usually free, with the costs of running such websites offset by sponsors and paid advertising. Because they are free, and newspaper inches are not at a premium online, free online classifieds are longer and more informative than their printed counterparts. With this new phenomenon, websites like Craigslist and Kijiji have quickly expanded and list millions of classifieds from all over the world. Such websites get over 10 million hits daily. For more specified local classified ads, there are a multitude of smaller websites that advertise based on certain geographical areas.

Advertising online with free classifieds gives much greater exposure to the advertiser, and also makes life much easier for the consumers. Online free classifieds are quickly outrunning their print media counterparts, capturing a large chunk of the market share. As early as 2003, with online advertising in its infancy, newspaper classifieds had a market of around $15 billion, while online classifieds logged around $14.1 billion as per the findings of Classified Intelligence, a market researcher.

If any proof was required to the importance free classifieds play in our lives, the revenue from this industry should put all doubts to rest. From generic items to niche markets and even social and matrimonial classifieds, the $100 billion plus industry is only set to grow with each passing year.

Alex Wu operates a free classifieds website that lets people advertise, build groups, and connect. He hopes to create an active environment for businesses to place their jobs.

Regard content as any object that is sent, received, created, stored, or otherwise handled in some way. A good CMS software should offer a framework upon which to build the tools involved to link humans with such information. According to the website www.cm3cms.com, a good CMS should have following elements:

1. Tools to facilitate build up any kind of content driven web interface

2. Forms management

3. User management

4. Personalisation services, i.e. the ability to point content to individual users and groups

5. Authentication

6. Starting points for purpose-specific content management applications – e.g. forums, surveys, shops, websites, intranet tools, extranet tools, information input and tracking, etc.

7. Index and search (well, James Robertson defined this already)

8. Tools to facilitate integration with other data management systems

With CMS, your unit or organization does not have to rely on someone else to run or monitor your daily transactions. Why You Need Power Factor Correction and TVSS Do Not Save Energy

February 5th, 2010 No comments »

In today’s energy climate more and more people have become motivated to accomplish what they can to become more energy efficient to conserve energy and money. Regrettably this same climate has encouraged some to take advantage of innocent consumers’ desires to save energy and reduce operating expenses.

Vendors that advertise power factor improvement (kVAR correction) and transient voltage suppression to save energy are a good case in point of this bad trend. Recently we are seeing more and more of these businesses cropping up and we believe it is time to set the record straight.

First off, transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) plays an important part in improving power quality to guard sensitive equipment inside a facility. However, TVSS does not save energy. TVSS’s are barely active an infinitesimal portion of a second to defend against voltage surges which only last for less than a millisecond. To actually decrease energy use the TVSS would need to essentially cut power consumption for an extended amount of time which is not what they are designed to do. Again, TVSS is essential to protect susceptible electrical equipment but consumers should steer clear of vendors promising, or even guaranteeing, a reduction in energy consumption.

And what about salespeople who maintain that increasing power factor will save 15% or 20% or 30% of energy consumption and resultant costs? This is false but also a bit trickier.

For homes, power factor correction does zero to save energy because the average home already has an average power factor of approximately 0.97 which is nearly the perfect power factor of 1 or unity. Additionally, the unit (called a capacitor) is installed at the homes main circuit breaker. According to IEEE 5.5.3.3 capacitors must be located at or near the individual inductive motor loads to decrease power system losses by reducing heat and distribution losses known as I2R losses.

So what about commercial and industrial facilities looking to use power factor correction to shrink energy expenditures? It is completely appropriate for a business that is incurring penalties or a kVA billing structure from the utility company to improve the facility’s overall power factor by installing a capacitor bank at the main electrical service entrance or individual capacitors at or near the particular motor loads. Doing so will do away with the power factor penalties and/or reduce the kVA demand charges on the electric bill which can save considerable money and provide a significant ROI on the investment.

But what about power factor correction reducing kWh consumption? IEEE also tells us that at most I2R losses only account for 2 to 5% of the total load in a facility. Simple arithmetic tells us that it would be in opposition to the laws of physics to obtain the 15% to 30% energy reduction claimed by some vendors. Consider it. Even if your facility had 5% distribution losses and you could correct 100% of the predicament via power factor correction at every load (which can’t be done) you would still save no more than 5% at most. No where close to the claims of some capacitor reps and manufacturers.

All that said, power factor correction when done appropriately will eliminate utility penalties and kVA demand charges, improve facility power quality, increase electrical system capacity, and save a modicum of energy when applied at the proper motor loads in an industrial facility.

So make an investment in transient voltage surge suppression and power factor correction when appropriate and necessary. But caveat emptor!

The MMA Legacy Of Helio Gracie

February 4th, 2010 No comments »

Helio Gracie–patriarch of the legendary Gracie MMA family–died earlier this year in Rio De Janeiro at age 95. His influence on martial arts, and even more so the sport that is known known as mixed martial arts, is staggering. The Gracie family name will forever be synonymous with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA and the UFC due to the accomplishments of Helio Gracie and his progeny.

Helio Gracie began his training in mixed martial arts early, and by his teenage years was already teaching judo. While he had no problem mastering the theoretical aspects of judo, he found that many of its techniques were less effective for a practitioner with a smaller build. Along with his brother Carlos, Gracie began to work out his own fighting system by adapting many of judo’s techniques and making them more a product of leverage rather than brute strength. This led to the creation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), frequently called Gracie Jiu Jitsu in his honor.

Gracie also had a professional fighting career of his own, taking on champions from other fighting disciplines in an early version of modern MMA. These bouts were grueling, unregulated affairs with rules that were often made up as they went along and time limits that seem barbaric by todays standards. By his own recollection, he had 15 fights against the top fighters of his day. These included pro wrestlers, boxers and other martial arts specialists.

Gracie’s most famous opponent was against legendary Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura. Gracie fought bravely in a losing cause, and ironically may have enhanced his reputation in defeat. He refused to submit to a reverse arm bar (the move that is now known as a ‘kimura’ in honor of its inventor), and the fight ended after his brother Carlos threw in the towel after Helio’s arm had been broken.

Gracie’s greatest impact, however, may have been through his progeny which is an important part of Brazilian sports and mixed martial arts even today. Royce Gracie is well known as the first UFC superstar, while sons Rickson Royler, Renzo have also achieved considerable fame in professional MMA. At the time of his death, Helio Gracie was a 6th Dan Judo black belt and the only living 10th degree master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Gracie died at age 95, after suffering stomach problems though the cause of his death was officially listed as ‘natural causes’. His last words are classic and highly fitting for a man who gave so much to martial arts and fighting sports:

Gracie’s last words are as follows:”I created a flag from the sports dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection and nerves of blood.

Insights On Part P Electrical

February 3rd, 2010 No comments »

It’s notable that a career within the electrical industry, with its attractive options, remains a choice for lots of people. Whilst the original term is ‘Electro-Mechanical Engineering’ we will simply refer to the subject as the Electrical Industry. Equally we’ll focus on those credentials that fit the UK domestic and commercial sector rather than those from around the world. Due to the huge list of opportunities available for a career in the electrical industry, we have to begin by focusing on the main areas and look at the ‘add-ons’ later on.

Basically there are two clear ways to gain admission into the electrical market. To being with we have the older apprentice course and then secondly we have the option for those who wish to make a career change to join the industry. To begin with we have the ‘Junior Entrants’ and then we have the ‘Mature Entrants’.

Primarily, those who join the industry later on, (the Mature Entrants,) generally do so with the aim of becoming self-employed at some point, or to work on their own building projects etc. without having to pay wages to external electricians. On the other hand, to gain further credentials and experience ‘Junior Entrants’ tend to work for a recognised electrical firm. To be fair, young apprentices leaving school will have a lot of supplementary skills to learn during their early years as a working adult.

These two distinct types of entry have two separate modes of training: NVQ’s are the key factor for all junior entrants. The core syllabus is similar to non NVQ commercial training, but the certification is compulsory. As a result students often have to find their own work programmes to give them the relevant testing and course work covered by most apprenticeships.

By working independently and without the need for NVQ assessments, many Mature Entrants can concentrate on those areas that provide the biggest profit and offer the largest practical solutions for themselves. Having said that, the mature student does aim to gain the necessary skills to do the job, whilst at the same time reducing their training costs at all times. This system, although appearing to reduce the attributes laid out, does allow for a faster and more solid entry into the domestic market.

So we have two defined routes laid out – one being for general employment and the other centred on self-employment. For the sake of this document we will assume that everyone involved in electrical employment is working full-time. Certainly, whilst salary levels can be affected by knowledge and qualifications, they can also be affected by competence and aptitude.

Although starting wages for ‘Junior Entrants’ are around 13k p.a. they can rise above 30k p.a. but this does depend on their level of experience. However, with incomes of 70,000 or more a year, a ‘Mature Entrants’ salary can often be more difficult to judge. It should be remembered however that a self employed person must often bear additional costs for items such as vehicles, tools and clothing. Furthermore, professional items such as accountancy, tax and insurance need to be considered to make the business work properly. However, the driving force remains the UK skills shortage and this means that there’s a load of work available. Therefore, working seven days a week (if a student wanted) is a possibility for most. It should be noted that figures of 70-100k p.a. advertised are not necessarily easy to come by and would require some long working hours to obtain them.

In light of the above, it is often understood that there is wild variance between the working expectations of Junior and Mature Entrants. Electricians who are ‘Junior Entrants’ would work a simple 40 hour working week. To be fair, if the Mature electrician is focused on the domestic market then they often find themselves working out of hours, especially to support their clients when they get home. With many self-employed electricians the core of their income comes from items such as business testing and installation and as such operates during the main part of the week.

Once a career in electrical work has been chosen, a Junior Electrician is often at the mercy of their employer when it comes to learning new skills and expertise. The mature entrant, on the other hand, may seek training outside of their core electrical field, possibly including plumbing and gas work. This gives them the chance to complete work for domestic clients without having to sub contract jobs out every time.

One new, fast growing area – one that invokes a wide array of skills sets and is new to the industry overall – is that of the ‘Green Engineer’. The curiosity of both Junior and Mature Electricians to this new industry is well founded especially when considering the power of the UK and the EEC markets in areas of growth and governmental projects.

Propositions That Are Essential To Know About Search Engine Marketing

February 2nd, 2010 No comments »

If you were to talk with a search engine marketing consultant, they would have certain tips to give you. There are many websites these days are not optimized for SERPs. This is important because if you do not have a website which is optimized and shows up in search engine results, you cannot get traffic to your website without having to buy it and this gets expensive.

If you are concerned about how your website shows up in websites, you may inquire about search engine marketing services. These services will usually concentrate their application upon three main areas: incoming links, your content, and your keywords. These are factors which are important for the search engines and will result in your website being placed higher in results if you focus on these propositions. This article will talk more about this.

The first of the important suggestions a search engine marketing services company will examine is competitive analysis. This is done to see how your website stacks up against the competition along with which companies are in the top ten results and why they are there.

The second acute point point to look into is keyword research to see which keywords are actually used by your prospective audience and how competitive these keywords are. Without proper keywords, your website is not visible to your niche audience searching for what you have to offer.

A search engine marketing freelancer will use page optimization to see which keywords are emphasized on various pages. This will ensure that your set of keywords is used properly throughout your website so that you show up for all keywords you are targeting.

Search engine marketing services companies will focus upon site usability. This is important because you want your website to be very easy to get around so that your audience is able to find what they are looking for.

Off page optimization such as link building is the next area which will be focused on by search engine marketing services companies. Link building is important because this is a factor in search engine rankings.

You can also think about using paid search engine marketing such as Adwords. This is an option some search engine marketing consultants will recommend because you can get your website in front of your audience faster than organic search engine marketing optimization efforts.

Contemplating through a search engine marketing consultant’s thought process, you can see why you need to implement these tips. Without using these tips, you are putting your site at jeopardy of not being able to found by your audience. It is acute to put these steps into place before making your site live.

Produce Income With Teleseminars, Indifferent to What Your Business Is!

February 1st, 2010 No comments »

It has been known for many years how successful teleseminars can help you market informational products, but that is a not all they are good for. Don’t be fooled by this concept. The marketing potential for teleseminars is nearly endless, and you can market informational products or your own services through them. We are going to briefly discuss some of the most successful ways people use teleseminars to make money.

There are entire markets that are wide open waiting to hear the information you have to offer, so keep that in mind. Putting your information about how to fix your own car may be the product you want to put together, and there is a market for that. Now you simply have to decide to put together a teleseminar that reveals those secrets. If you give away enough information in the teleseminar, it may even be worth charging for attendance.

This teleseminar could be a training session to share your secrets for dealing with the real estate market. Development of a series of training videos may help some of your attendees.

Each one of these sessions could focus on different types of real estate investment. Teleseminars which provide information on the local real estate market are great ways to find investors and buyers.

Using a teleseminar to show how to change the zoning of a particular piece of ground may be helpful. You may want to discuss loan programs. The options are nearly endless with real estate. You could sell the training package which would consist of several teleseminars. To get peoples attentions initially, you may want to let them in for free. You could advertise the teleseminar on the Internet.

People would be able to login to register for the free session. Getting them in so they listen to what you have to say is really the reason you want to give them free access, after that you can sell them anything. Continually creating new products this way will mean you always have something else you can sell them, once they make your email list.

Being resourceful enough to find free recording services will help keep expenses down too. You could then offer the taped sessions for sale. Making a few choices available to them is a great enticement too.

Thoughts on Networking Training Revealed

January 31st, 2010 No comments »

If it weren’t for a constant influx of knowledgeable network and PC support personnel, business in the UK (and around the world) would surely grind to a halt. There is an ever growing requirement for people to support both the systems and the users themselves. Because we become massively more dependent on advanced technology, we simultaneously find ourselves increasingly dependent on the skilled and qualified networking professionals, who keep the systems going.

A lot of training providers will only provide basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); not many go late into the evening (after 8-9pm) or cover weekends properly.

You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and phone support is often to a call-centre which will just take down the issue and email it over to their technical team – who’ll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, when it suits them. This is not a lot of use if you’re stuck with a particular problem and have a one hour time-slot in which to study.

If you look properly, you’ll find the top providers which provide their students direct-access support 24×7 – even in the middle of the night.

If you accept anything less than support round-the-clock, you’ll end up kicking yourself. It may be that you don’t use it late at night, but you’re bound to use weekends, late evenings or early mornings.

An all too common mistake that we encounter all too often is to focus entirely on getting a qualification, and take their eye off where they want to get to. Colleges are brimming over with unaware students who took a course because it seemed fun – rather than what would get them an enjoyable career or job.

It’s possible, in some situations, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study and then find yourself trapped for decades in a tiresome job role, as a consequence of not performing the correct research at the beginning.

It’s essential to keep your focus on where you want to get to, and create a learning-plan from that – not the other way round. Stay focused on the end-goal – making sure you’re training for something you’ll still be enjoying many years from now.

Talk to an experienced industry professional who knows about the sector you’re looking at, and could provide a detailed run-down of what you actually do in that role. Contemplating this long before commencement of any retraining course will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

Let’s face it: There really is pretty much no individual job security anywhere now; there’s only industry or business security – companies can just drop any single member of staff if it suits their business interests.

In actuality, security now only emerges in a fast rising market, driven by a lack of trained workers. It’s this shortage that creates the right conditions for a secure marketplace – definitely a more pleasing situation.

The IT skills-gap in the United Kingdom is standing at approximately twenty six percent, according to the most recent e-Skills survey. That means for each four job positions existing across computing, we have only 3 certified professionals to fulfil that role.

Accomplishing proper commercial computing certification is consequently a fast-track to achieve a life-long and rewarding living.

In reality, acquiring professional IT skills as you progress through the next year or two is probably the greatest career choice you could ever make.

Commercial certification is now, very visibly, taking over from the more academic tracks into IT – why then has this come about?

With university education costs spiralling out of control, along with the industry’s growing opinion that vendor-based training often has more relevance in the commercial field, there has been a great increase in Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA accredited training programmes that educate students at a much reduced cost in terms of money and time.

Academic courses, for example, become confusing because of a great deal of loosely associated study – with much too broad a syllabus. Students are then held back from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

Think about if you were the employer – and your company needed a person with some very particular skills. What’s the simplest way to find the right person: Wade your way through loads of academic qualifications from various applicants, struggling to grasp what they’ve learned and which workplace skills they have, or choose particular accreditations that exactly fulfil your criteria, and make your short-list from that. You can then focus on how someone will fit into the team at interview – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

Don’t Lose Your EPAct 2005 Tax Deductions

January 30th, 2010 No comments »

Many businesses have implemented energy efficiency measures in their facilities over the past several years to help decrease operating expenses and aid the local and global environment. What a lot of these companies do not know is that sizeable federal tax deductions are available to them and also that time may be running out.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) provides generous, immediate tax deductions to businesses for making energy efficiency improvements to their buildings. The federal tax incentives center mainly on efficiency improvements to lighting, HVAC and building envelopes and can be as large as $1.80 per square foot.

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 extended Section 179D and EPAct 2005 so the act will not expire until December 31, 2013. However, that does not mean that time may not be running out for some companies.

For businesses that implemented energy efficiency projects in 2006 it is probable they filed their tax returns before April 15, 2007. If they were unaware of the deductions at that time, they are now at risk of losing those tax deductions forever since the IRS only allows a three year period to amend tax returns.

That means if you have not yet amended your 2006 tax return you have only a few months left to do so!

As an electrical contractor working with commercial and industrial customers you certainly have been thinking about ways to increase your sales and likely how to better utilize your current book of business to that end. You have also most likely been approached by your current customers asking what they can do to reduce their energy costs.

Have you thought about a strategic partnership with an experienced engineering firm that specializes solely in turnkey, energy cost reduction projects on a national level? One that can bring whole facility energy solutions to the table for you and your customers? A company that can provide a fast payback and increase cash flow for your customer?

Bringing in such a company will grow your business as you will be the one who is sub-contracted by the engineering firm to provide the installation services under their management and direction. You can use this approach over and over again with all of your customers and doing so will not only increase your revenues exponentially, it will also transform your customers’ impression of you from simply another vendor to that of a valued consultant.
